What Causes Arrhythmia And Flutter In A Teenager?

My son 18 years of age in university had irregular heart beats a week back. A ECG diagonised Atrial Fibrilation and Flutter. He had a 500 mg paracetamol that morning. He very rarely takes caffine or energy drinks. The Dr. will be placing a holster for 24 hours to monitor heart beat. He is on concor and asprin for 9 days now. My question is what could have caused this in an 18 year old and is it one off. Please help.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

After going through your medical details, I understand your concern and I would like to tell you that atrial fibrillation is very rare in young adults. But these can be caused by caffeine , alcohol, stress, mineral imbalance, any infection or sleep apnea. Atrial fibrillating heart in an adult works same like as in older patients and treatment is also same. Afib can be intermittent but treatment will be same as for Afib. Continue with the medication and wait for Holter monitor result and also get an echocardiography done to rule out if any structural heart disease is present.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
