What Causes Back Pain On The Left Side?

I have pain on the left side of my mid back. It goes around the side also. My wife put on pain cream and rubbed it and felt s little lump under the skin. May be s muscle. It has been 8 days. No better. Thought it was a pulled muscle. Now wondering if if could be kidney?

For detecting better what is it you should do an ultrasound of the affected area and after having the result your doctor will advise you further.
