Hello,
Epidural steroid injections are given for relief from pain to the patient but they have significant risks. You should report the discomfort to the treating doctor. Epidural steroid injections can cause
nerve damage,
cartilage damage, joint infection, deteriorate bone quality, may make
spinal stenosis worse, increase the risk of
spinal fracture, etc. It can be the back pain that is radiating to the knees.
You are suggested to get your father clinically examined by an orthopedics and get X-ray, CT, MRI done to detect the pathology (spinal stenosis, sciatica, slip disc, RA, OA, etc) in the spine and knee that is causing the hurt. He will also be recommended to get few blood tests done. He will be treated accordingly. Treatment commonly includes a combination of conservative treatment,
physical therapy and surgery if required. In the meantime he can take NSAIDS, Naproxen, one SOS when required after food.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
