What Causes Backache Along With Swelling Below The Ribcage?

I have a recurring issue about once a month. Radiating back pain on day one, feeling a bit like flu, turns into pain in the side of my rib on day two which ends up with a small swelling or bruise like area of a vein at the bottom of my rib above my waist. Also, with fatigue and headaches. Day 3 turns into a very small bruises but with a lot of pain and tenderness in the ribs that takes a few days to go away. It can happen on the left side or right side. My doctor hasn t a clue what it is.
