What Causes Bad Taste In Mouth And Bleeding During Wisdom Tooth Growth?

I got my wisdoms out almost a week ago now and I hate to say it but I have not been taking my antibiotics faithfully like I should have. 3/4 of the gum holes are healing great, but one which had to be cut into deeper for some reason isn't. I have a bad taste in my mouth when I try chewing on that side and A little blood. Is this a sign of infection? What should I do?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

As per your query bad taste in mouth and bleeding after wisdom tooth removal is normal. This problem persists until the socket is healed completely. The reason behind the bad taste is because of the food impaction in the socket which doesn’t get cleaned. Hence the bad taste in mouth after wisdom tooth removal might also be coupled with a foul smell. This problem usually subsides easily without any complications.

I would suggest you to follow all the instructions properly given by dentist. Do warm saline gargles on daily basis.

Sip ice cold water and try to suck ice cubes as well.

Do betadine gargles. Don't smoke and take alcohol as it will delay healing.Visit dentist.

Eat soft food products and try to avoid from that side for few days.

Take proper antibiotic course to prevent further spread of infection.

If you would not follow these instructions properly chances of dry socket can be there. Visit dentist once if this condition keeps on persisting.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain bad taste in mouth and slight blood after a week of wisdom tooth extraction shows that there is either an unhealed socket leading to formation of DRY SOCKET or an infection in the extraction socket leading to bad breath..

A dry socket is formed when the blood clot that is formed after extraction is dislodged leaving the socket empty and the healing does not takes place in that condition leading to a painful condition known as dry socket..

In case if there was some foreign body inclusion or left out root piece in the socket or if after extraction proper hygiene is not maintained can lead to infection in the socket causing bad odour and blood..

I would suggest you not to ignore it and consult a dentist soon and get evaluated..

In case of dry socket irrigation of the socket with hydrogen peroxide, betadine and saline followed by zinc oxide eugenol dressing can promote healing and also has a sedative effect..

In case of foreign body inclusion or left out root piece or food accumulation removal of the same followed by irrigation and antibiotic course for 5 days can help..

Hope this information helps..
