What Causes Belching And Periodic Spasms In Abdominal Area?

Thank you very much. I have been experiencing increased 'belching' throughout the day and periodic spasms in my abdominal area, particularly in the middle of the night/early morning, which wake me up. When I massage the area, they see go away. Sometimes I will chew two Tums, and the symptoms will subside. There are also times when I feel 'full' pretty quickly when eating. I am purposefully eating slower. I appreciate your time and your answer.

Hello dear,

Belching and spasms in abdomen is due to Acid reflux, secondary to relaxation of the sphincter at the lower part of esophagus and is characteristic of Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Medical management consists of intake of Proton pump inhibitors like Pantoprazole (which prevent acid formation in stomach)+ Domperidone preparations (strengthens the sphincter & prevents reflux)

In addition you need to follow certain diet & lifestyle measures, such as:
1. Dietary modification- avoid consuming irritating substances such as acidic & rich foods, caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol.
2. Lifestyle modification- like weight reduction, sleeping on the left side, or with upper body raised.

If symptoms still persist, it will be better to consult your Doctor/ Gastroenterologist.

There is no need to worry, you will be fine.
