What Causes Big Toe Pain With Swelling?

Hi, for the past few days the middle part of my big toe was hurting but bearable. Yesterday it was hurting more than before and i decided to massage it. It has now swollen up and hurts a lot when walking. I know it is not broken but why is it hurting?
