What Causes Bitter Phlegm?

Hi! I just have a question about bitter phlegm? It s not that I m coughing it, but sometimes when I just swallow and if there s phlegm, it s really bitter and this just started happening probably just last month. Also, it doesn t happen often. Just sometimes. I was wondering if it ll pass? Is it something I m eating, or anything I should be eating? Thanks!!

Pulmonologist 's  Response
Hello,

No, bitter phlegm can not be caused by food. A most common cause of bitter phlegm is a lung infection. So in my opinion, you should definitely consult pulmonologist and get done chest x-ray. If the chest x-ray is normal, then no need to worry for a lung infection. A smoking habit can also cause the same. So quit smoking if you are an active smoker.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
