What Causes Black Blood Just Before My Menses?

I am a 30 year old woman, and my period was due tomorrow, but today i had black blood.... this is quite odd as usually I have regular 28 day cycles and have never experienced this. I have also been having a slight tugging sensation in my lower right abdomen. I am a mother to a 4 year old.
