What Causes Black Color Discharge During Menstruation?

Hello. I started my period 2 days ago, and My period blood is black like tar and is very thick. I heard it could be "old blood" and would pass after the first day but it is day 3 and still black. Also i took plan B last week and am not sure if that has anything to do with this. please help!
