What Causes Black Holes In Ear?

My 4 year old son was playing in the sand the other day and his older brother threw sand at him and some got in his ear. This morning after his bath, i noticed sand in his ear so i gently swabbed and it came clean except for 2 perfectly round black holes in his ear. They re about 2 mm apart and black and they are definitely holes and not black heads.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Hole inside the ear denotes a hole in the tympanic membrane also known as ear drum. These holes can occur due to infection or due to rupture of the tympanic membrane. Since you have mentioned removal of dirt and mud from the child's ear, infections especially fungal infections (which is usually black in color) should be suspected. Removal of any dirt and administration of anti-fungal ear drops twice or thrice a day will reduce any infection.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
