What Causes Black Spotting Before Periods Started?

This afternoon, I thought my period will start but until 4 am when I checked it, it was just black spotting blood?
What does it mean-is there anything wrong in my body?
It is just first time that happened to me and i am living with my actually for almost 2 years..
