Hello,

The black stools indicate bleeding from the stomach and this can be a serious and life-threatening condition. I do not think the black stools are much related to the hernia itself. It seems to be a separate condition.

It is important that you have an upper endoscopy to evaluate your upper gastrointestinal tract to locate the bleeding. The doctor will further decide on the needed treatment if he is able to identify the source of bleeding.

Also, if your hemoglobin level is under 8 mg/dl, transfusion is needed as well to prevent you from severe anemia. Also, iron taken intravenously may help boost your iron stores quicker.

I hope this answers your query.
I remain at your disposal for further medical assistance.
