What Causes Black Stools?

I took a fecal test at home and it came back abnormal now I have to get a colonoscopy. I read that if you take iron pills and im taking an anti inflammatory meditation can be suspect. Also I took sample out of toilet bowl and I use cleaner which is a blue/green color. That is not recommended. My stool is often blackish but I read that was due to iron pills. I don t have any other symptoms such as weight loss bloating or loss of appetite but I am concerned. I am a 65 year old female and I m relatively healthy

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Black stools indicate intestinal bleeding (in absence of other factors as iron tablets, bismuth based medicines, and others).

Intestinal bleeding can be from the ulcer, tumor, or other inflammatory lesions of the intestine. Systemic issues as vascular malformations, varices in the intestine, bowel ischemia are also present in this way.

Strongly recommended to undertake colonoscopy at the earliest to get the proper diagnosis and management accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Purva Patel
