What Causes Blackish Discoloration Under The Toe Nails?
Hi, I have taken off my nail polish that was on my toenails for a week and notice that on both big toe nails there is the color black underneath them. On the left one it is about 1/4 of the toe near my skin from the bottom all the way up, but bigger on the bottom and on the right toe it is on the far side of the toe in a straight line about a 1/4 of the toe in a straight line too. Actually, they are both bigger than a 1/4 . Should I see a doctor or try a fungus over the counter med, they do not hurt.
A blackish discoloration under the toe nail may be caused by an underlying medical condition like anemia, diabetes, heart disease or kidney diseases or more commonly due to fungal infections like tinea.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Ajeet Singh, General & Family Physician
