What Causes Bleeding And Clotting After Missing A Period?

I am a 45yr old mother of two teenagers. My mensus has always been regular, but i missed my period for more than four weeks and now have been bleeding for 18days. The bleeding is heavy, bright red with clots. Is this normal? Do i need to see a doctor?
