What Causes Bleeding During Intercourse?

I was having sex with my boyfriend tonight. When we were finished, I realized I had bled through all the way to the mattress. I also feel very crampy even a couple of hours later. I am not pregnant. I am on nuva ring. I have NEVER bled like this during sex. What could be the cause?
