Hi I AM SUFFERING FROM AN UNUSUAL CONDITION. MY SYMTOMS ARE HARD TO EXPLAIN, BUT I WILL TRY. I VE BEEN DEALING WITH THIS ISSUE FOR QUITE SOME TIME AND I CAN T DEAL WITH IT NO LONGER. I HAVE SEEN A FEW OF DOCTORS AND KNOW ONE CAN DIAGNOSE MY PROBLEM. hERE I GO I M SUFFERING FROM EXTREME BLOATNESS, PAIN IN MY MID ABDOMINAL AREA THAT TRAVELS TO MY LOWER BACK, COUGHING UP THICK SALAVA OR MUCUS, CONSTIPATION AND BOWEL RUMBLING. WHEN THEM SYMTOMS SUBSIDE OCCASSIONALY IT MOVES UP MY BODY THROUGH MY BACK AND INTO MY HEAD WHICH CAUSES AN UPPER RESPITORY INFECTION AND NASAL DRIP THAT SECRETES A LOT OF THICK SALAVA OR MUCUS THAT MAKE ME GAG AND IRRITATES MY VOCAL CORDS. I KNOW THIS SOUNDS IMPOSSIBLE BUT THIS IS WHATS GOING ON WITH ME. MY QUESTION IS DOES THIS SOUNDS LIKE A DIGESTIVE ISSUE AND CAN IT BE CORRECTED?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
The presence of mucus in stool is common. And normal in some amounts however a large amount of visible mucus in your stool isn’t normal and might be a sign of a problem. If you begin seeing mucus in your stool, the levels are probably already elevated. That doesn’t necessarily indicate you have a problem, but it’s something you should monitor especially if there is blood in stool or pain during defecation. In such cases it may be caused by inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohns or ulceratice colitis. IBS or infectious colitis are another causes but it would be assoictaed with fever and loose stools. All in all, you should wait for few days, have easy diet, lot of fluids and see will it improve. If not you should do colonoscopy as a start of work up.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
