What Causes Blocked Ears Along With Popping Sounds?

I have an upper respiratory infection w/bronchitis. While coughing I had a popping sound in my left ear. Every now and then, when I cough I have wind coming out of the left ear, although the sounds in both ears is muffled - but I can still hear. The doctor I went to said I have no wax, but there is fluid on the ear. I read online where water on the ear can cause deafness - I do not have pain, but I do feel pressure in the left ear (the same side I get the air blowing through). Any suggestions. Should I be concerned and go to an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist? --- or wait out the recovery of the bronchitis to see if it goes away itself?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

First of all, it's sad to know what you had been going through lately.

Based on the history you have shared, it can be due to upper respiratory tract infection and it can either lead to eustachian tube blockage or otitis media.

An ENT specialist review is recommended. Oral antibiotics and decongestants may be helpful. Anti histamines like cetrizine or loratidine can also be used.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
