What Causes Blood In Phlegm?

Had surgery to replace pain pump on June 26 and spit up a small amount of blood with phlegm next morning. Figured it was due to the anesthesia stuff. Well 3 wks ago I noticed some in my phlegm again now last night and twice today I ve noticed a little in my phlegm again. I am a smoker and no my lungs aren t great but don t have COPD that I m aware of at least yet. The blood is bright and seems to be a worse each time it comes up but not spitting up just blood it s lil strips of it in the phlegm. About ready to go to the ER cause it s scaring me so badly. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thank you much. Oh the pain pump is for a very bad back with progressive kyphosis etc.... thanks again! P.S. yes whatever it is it s scares me enough that I ll be quitting just hope it s not to late.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Possible causes are tobacco induced bronchitis or bronchiectasis or pulmonary tuberculosis or lung malignancy or upper respiratory tract infections etc.

Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is.

Please get chest X-ray or HRCT, sputum for grams staining and microscopy.

Please consult your physician he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Take care.
