What Causes Blood In Semen Occasionally?

hi there. At the beginning of the year, i discovered blood in my semen. I went to my doctor, who sent me for ultrasounds of my prostae and bladder. He also referred me to a urologist. The urologist performed a cysoscopy. He said that everything was fine (as were the results of the ultrasound) and explained to me that the prostate sometimes gets congested, which can result in blood in semen. It took about six weeks for the problem to clear up. About six weeks ago, I notice blood in my semen again, but it cleared up very quickly. Now, this week, there have been two occasions where there has been blood in my semen. I m wondering if it is just something i ll have to get used to (that it comes and goes) or whether I should be concerned? I m a healthy 51 year old male. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The recurrent blood in the semen indicates inflammation of prostate at microscopic level, which may not be evident on ultrasound or cystoscopy evaluation. It is best recommended to undertake following investigations if not done previously:
- Urine culture
- Semen culture
- Prostatic fluid culture after prostate massage for 5 minutes
- HBA1c level
- Sexually transmitted disease panel tests such as FTA ABS for syphillis, NTA for gonorrhea and chlamydia etc.

If any of the additional reports apart from ultrasound and cystoscopy is available kindly share with me during follow up discussion so that better guidelines of management can be figured out.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
