What Causes Blood In Sputum?

Hi, My Dad, when ever wakes up from bed in morning or any time, when he spits sputum a light traces of blood is seen, when we have consulted doctor he said its because throat infection, whereas my Dad doesnt have caugh or swallowing problems, so doctor sujjested for blood tests, ECG, chest X-Ray, and Endoscopy. do we need to perform all these test. what might be the problem. regards Praneeth

Hi Dear ,

Welcome to HCM,

As per your query you have symptoms of blood in sputum also known as hemoptysis. Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like Bronchitis , Lung abscess, Lung cancer , Emphysema , Mitral valve stenosis and acid reflux can produce such symptoms .

If there is dry cough along with blood in sputum then there are chances of acid reflux. Well this condition need immediate medical attention and I would suggest you to consult chest specialist for proper diagnosis . Doctor may order certain test like CT scan , chest X-ray , bronchoscopy , physical examination , biopsy and complete blood count .

Doctor may prescribe Antibiotics for pneumonia or tuberculosis , Chemotherapy and/or radiation for lung cancer ,Steroids for inflammatory conditions or refer you to gastroenterologist if he find problem to be related with acid reflux .
