What Causes Blood In Stool And Urine Along With Pain Around The Navel?

Hi I am 20 years old, female who was admitted in the hospital with the symptom of bloody stool, drastic weight loss and mood swings and cramps above my belly button and on the left side below my belly button. They checked my blood and urine and diagnosed that there is nothing wrong and it s a minor infection, but the doctor did not really answer what infection and said that weight loss is due to stress. I was usually 46-49kg and now I am 38kg. My blood reports showed high ldl cholesterol and my nutrient intake was fine but I still don t have any reason to not gain weight and I m still trying to recover. Please advise me on what this can be. I can send you the list of medicines the doctor gave which are a lot and make me more weak

Hi,

In your case, blood presence in stool doesn’t seem to be something serious. And in most causes of are benign and include hemorrhoids, anal fissure or rectal polyps. These are primarily treated with stool softener, diet and sitzbaths.

If there are some other symptoms such as weigh loss or pain or inability to have bowel movements then some further tests should be done. It is common that hard stool leads to bleeding due to fragile hemorrhoids so it is important to soften your stool with an appropriate diet that includes a lot of fluids, probiotics, high fibre food and stool softeners to avoid hard stool and straining.

If there is no improvement in next few weeks, then tests are required which include colonoscopy and irigography. Other causes may be more serious and include tumors or inflammatory bowel diseases and these should be ruled out with colonoscopy which must be done if there is low blood count present or rapid weight loss.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
