What Causes Blood In Stool In Elderly People?

My dad is 90 years old. He passed blood in his stool last week. His physician examined him and said he couldn't feel anything and that if we waited a month or two (if there is cancer), this would cause no harm to him. Do you have any suggestions?
Thank you
