What Causes Blood In Stool While Recovering From Knee Bursitis?

Today I had 6 bloody stools in a row (never happened to me before, ever!). I am recovering from knee bursitis, which hit me out of the blue one morning two weeks ago. I went to the emergency room and they determined it was bursitis. They said to follow up with my GP, which I did last Thursday. He drained some bloody substance from the knee last week and suggested I take Alleve, which I started 4 days ago. This followed a week of taking a prescription including naproxen after I had gone to the emergency room with the inflamed knee I woke up with. Are the bloody stools the result of the Alleve; or is the body ejecting more blood from the knee (which feels much better today) through my bowels (is that even possible?) as it heals? I also had adjuvant prostate radiation in spring 2015. I just read that blood stools can result from that years later. My number of daily bowel movements has increased since the treatment. I m assuming that the bloody stools will continue today every time I feel the diarrhea type cramp returning, as it has since lunch today. So far, I feel okay, with no dizziness or the like from loss of blood. Any thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated. Many thanks. (BTW, I am awaiting a call back from the nurse in my doctor s office now.)

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

In most cases, causes of abdominal pain and bleeding through rectum are benign and include hemorrhoids, anal fissure or rectal polyps. These are primarily treated with the stool softener, diet and Sitz baths. It is very important to take a lot of fluids, probiotics, high fibre food and stool softeners to avoid hard stool and straining. If there is no improvement in the next few weeks, then surgical management should be considered. Other causes may be more serious and include tumors or inflammatory bowel diseases and these should be ruled out with colonoscopy which must be done if there is low blood count present or rapid weight loss. Otherwise, you can see if conservative therapy will help and consult proctologist if necessary.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
