Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a 46 year old male who plays basketball 3 times per week. I have noticed from time to time that the first time I use the bathroom after playing, there is some bloody mucous accompanied with the bowel movement. I haven't noticed this at other times, but have several times after running and playing basketball.
Hi, thank you for asking Healthcare Magic. With this presentation, I don't think it is really a big problem but it is necessary to rule out pile (internal hemorrhoid). This condition is often worsened by hard stool. May be after playing basketball, you lose much water and your stool becomes hard, irritating the walls of bowel and causing this blood in stool. To be sure that pile is not the cause, you need to consult a specialist (gastroenterologist) who will examine your anus, anal canal and rectum with a special device.
The presence of any blood either along or with mucus or stool should be investigated.
It would be best to see your doctor for an assessment which would include physical examination, stool analysis sent to the lab and likely imaging. The imaging may be barium study or colonoscopy.
I hope this helps
