What Causes Blood In Stool?

Hi. My 9 year old son has had anal fissures before when we was younger and would have bloody stools. Now, it rarely happens. His bowel movements seem regular and his stools are not hard but they are large. Once in a while he would have some bright red blood in his stools and he says he doesn t strain. Just recently we had a bowel movement and no blood. About 20 minutes later he farted and it was mucus with bright red blood. Doctors have just said to increase his fiber but does that really help since his stools are soft anyway. Should I be concerned?

Yous son has been diagnosed as having chronic anal fissure. If his bowel movements are normal, soft, and painless, still on and off passing blood in stools, it would be good if he gets a proctoscopic, and if required a sigmoidoscopic examination to rule out ant rectal polyps. These could cause fresh blood in stools on and off. Please consult a gastroenterologist. Alter the examination doctor can advise the proper management. If there is a rectal polyp, it can easily be removed at the same time of the examination and sent for histopathological examination. Of-course it is good if he takes adequate amounts of fruits, vegetables, fluids and fiber content to keep his stools soft.
