What Causes Blood In Stool?

My mom is 77 and does not drink enough water daily or consume roughage per day, when she has a B.M she said she strains could that possibly cause a small amount of blood in her stool??? I told her more than likely it would but she told me I am not a Dr. so she won t listen to me???
