What Causes Blood In Urine While Suffering From UTI?

Male, age 50, quadriplegic (C-4). Experiencing Autonomic Dysreflexia. Have supra-pubic catheter.E.R. said he hashed a Urinary tract infection, gave me ciprofloxacin sent me home. A.D. is usually related to bowel issues,haven t had a b.m.in days.Asked for digital stimulation, nurse said, no way am I doing that .he s at home now.have been urinating blood also urine and blood is coming from his penis. Called urologist,made appt. for tomorrow a.m..Should he go back to E.R. because of penis bleeding? Nurse from assisted living wants him to go back. When he talked to urologist, he told them what was happening. They didn t tell him to go back.What should he do? Just being moved makes autonomic dysreflexia even worse.

Hello,

The blood in urine while suffering from UTI and supra pubic catheter in place means the extent of infection is more causing thickening of bladder wall and sloughing of epithelial cells with blood. There is no hurry to rush for an ER visit, rather follow below measures:
- Drink more liquids
- Urinary alkalizer as potassium chloride if medically permitted
- Glycerine suppository to evacuate the bowel
- High fiber diet with bulk forming laxative as Ispaghula husk or Psyllium
