What Causes Bloody Taste In Mouth And Nose?

Hi. I am experiencing the smell of blood in my nose and taste it in my mouth. I also have bad pain in my nasal passage for a while, but that has since gone away. I have a pulsating headache that I got right after the onset of the blood smell and it gets really painful when I move around. Is this something to be alarmed about?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

Thanks for your concern . The bloody taste in your mouth and nose is coming from infection in your sinuses ,which is also responsible for headache . Although there can be other reason also for bloody taste like ry mouth , gum disease (gingivitis ) or chronic alcoholism.

I would suggest you to :

- Do warm salt water gargles 2-3 times a day .

- Take steam twice a day .

- Give hon compresses on face .

- Maintain proper oral hygiene and quit smoking and drinking.

Consult ENT specialist (ear, nose, throat) for proper examination and rule out causes like gingivitis or any dental injury . Doctor may order X-ray , blood test or CT scan to confirm the diagnosis .

Doctor may prescribe antibiotics (penicillin or amoxicillin) for at least 10 days , decongestants o mucolytic agents (ambroxol) .

Doctor may also refer you to dentist if there is any dental or gum related problem.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
