Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son is 10 years old. Just yesterday his lower lip turned a shade of blue and I thought he had eaten blue ices and that was why it was discolored. That was not the case. The lip feels a little painful to him as if bruised, but he cannot recall hurting it or biting it (maybe in his sleep?). He has not exhibited any strange behavior or seeming lack of oxygen (as some sites say it could be cyanosis). He has had normal activity and his mood, eating and sleeping are all normal. Is this something I should see our pediatrician about? I am just concerned that the color has remained the same since yesterday and that it could be more than just a bruise. Thank you!
Understanding your concern. As per your query your child have symptoms of bluish discoloration of lips which seems to be due to cyanosis i.e less oxygen flow in the blood vessels and major possible causes for the same is impaired circulation which might be related to heart/lung. If your child is healthy with no such problems it could be due to genetic problem of methemoglobinemia which runs in families.
Yes you should be concerned about it. I would suggest you to visit hematologist/ pediatrician once and get it examined thoroughly and get it examined. Go for blood tests and start treatment accordingly. Give child adequate rest and plenty of fluids.
Hope your concern has been resolved.
Get Well Soon.
Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
