What Causes Bowel Incontinence In A Child?

My 7 year old is still soiling her underwear after being to a specialist, (was constipated) and this was rectified with osmalax. 2 years on, she does not have the sensation of needing to go toilet until after the fact. It is more like diahorrea not constipation anymore. We have however cut back the dosage of osmalax (laxative). Help

Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history.
Read and understood the history about your daughter being under treatment with Osmalax for constipation and now soiling her underwear.
It is good that you have reduced the dosages, but it looks to me that the leakage is due to over-activity of Osmalax.
Osmalax works by drawing in the fluid from the body into te intestine.
The Physiology of the intestinal tract of the children is not matured enough to tackle this menace.
Please stop this altogether and ask your Doctor to shift to another laxative without such side effects.
Get back to the Doctor and request for per-rectal examination to see that there is no extra laxity of the anal sphincter.

I hope this answers your query.
