What Causes Bowel Incontinence In A Child?

Hi my son is 10yrs old and has been having this ugly issues of always having accidents not making it to the bathroom or not feeling it and or to late making it to the bathroom. It is a very ugly smell! Smells like sewage all the times. He sees a GI Dr but told me we have done everything we could. However, had me do a cleanses 1/2 a month as needed to clean him out. My son now refuses it all and I don t blame him having to do a fleece, ELax, everytime. I now have him on a Gluten Free diet and of course in sports to try helping or think it would help him, but really doesn t. Fiber is another thing we give him. I m sure if he had an Xray done we would see he is backup with old bowel. What is could help my son?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query your son is having symptoms of bowel incontinence that is making him uncomfortable. It could be due to irritable bowel syndrome, eating a lot of dairy products, some medications like antidepressants, acidity and due to lack of fibres in diet. Need not to worry. It could be due to gluten related allergic reaction as well. For now drink lot of water, do light exercises and avoid fatty and heavy meals. You should avoid intake of outside food. I would suggest you to consult gastroenterologist for proper examination. Doctor may order colonoscopy or other tests to look for blockages in your colon , barium studies and blood test for hormonal changes. Doctor may prescribe osmotic laxatives , stool softeners and medicine to reduce acidity. You should go for light walk daily and avoid immediate sleep after having meals.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
