What Causes Bowel Incontinence In A Child?

My 7 year old son constantly holds his bowel movements. He has explained to me that he hates the way it feels. He doesn t admit to any pain or anything, and he doesn t always hold it. What can I do? Is this a phase? He would use the bathroom to urinate, but when it comes to BMs, he d hold it and I would often find pieces in the floor or maybe even in his underwear. When it s in his underwear, it isn t firm. I m not sure what to do. I am strongly considering a visit to his pediatrician.

Hi Dear,

Understanding your concern. As per your query your son is having symptoms of bowel incontinence which could be due to irritable bowel syndrome and due to lack of fibres in diet.

Need not to worry. I would suggest to drink lot of water, do light exercises and avoid fatty and heavy meals. You should avoid intake of outside food. I would suggest you to consult gastroenterologist for proper examination. Doctor may order colonoscopy and barium studie. Doctor may prescribe osmotic laxatives , stool softeners and medicine to reduce acidity. You should go for light walk daily and avoid immediate sleep after having meals.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
