What Causes Bowel Incontinence Post Intake Of Food?

I have a colonostamy. I have always had leakage from my rectum. I have had a year. I am now passing what seems like poop from rectum when i eat so I am afraid to eat. I am in so much pain. I do not think it is an infection-no fever. Original surgery put colon together-it came apart. I was septic in hospital for a month. Radiation stirred up infection back to hospital had drain in my back. Same pain no fever. Going to Stanford Jan. 7 Colon has never been right. can I wait? Original surgeon 3 hrs away does not help me.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you are having symptoms of bowel incontinence post intake of food which could be due to

- systemic causes
- irritable bowel syndrome
- some medications like antidepressants
- eating a lot of dairy products,
- due to lack of fibres in diet.

Need not to worry. You should take plenty of fluids and avoid intake of sharp, spicy and hot food substances. I would suggest you to consult gastroenterologist for proper examination. Doctor may order colonoscopy or other tests to look for blockages in your colon , barium studies and blood test for hormonal changes. Doctor may prescribe osmotic laxatives , stool softeners and medicine to reduce acidity.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Get Well Soon.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
