What Causes Breathing Difficulty After A Gastric Bypass Surgery?

My 71-year-old mother has problems with breathing after gastric bypass surgery. She also has sever neck pain could be unrelated though. She was wondering if the surgery somehow resulted in affecting her diaphragm which leaves her little space for proper lung function.

Hi,

I think your mother's problems are of musculoskeletal in nature explaining her neck pain. I do not think it's related to diaphragm damages. That can be perfectly diagnosed through x-ray studies and respiratory function test.

Give Paracetamol and see if pain is eased. Change her position and see if breathing is also improved. Sometimes hyperacidity problems of the stomach can also cause breathing issues. Give her antacids and Simethicone if bloated and see if improved. Discuss this further with her caring doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
