What Causes Breathing Difficulty At Night?

Hi I am 33 years old and I have never had any type of breathing issue, asthma, or respiratory problems. I have always been able to drink any type of alcohol with no significant issues... Just the normal hangover the next day. A few weeks ago, I went on vacation with my family and we were drinking alcohol daily for 7 days straight. After the 5th day, I began having difficulty breathing at night. I had an inhaler because my daughter has asthma, so I found myself using it on a nightly basis. I thought I was just coming down with something and I didn t attribute it to my increase in alcohol consumption. When I got home, I stopped drinking and my breathing improved. Today, I had 2 Margaritas in the afternoon and I am finding difficult to breath again. I don t know what s going on. Can you help?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Sleep apnea causes shallow or brief pauses in breathing while sleeping. This condition usually occurs due to obstruction of the airways.

In some cases, breathing difficulty can be a sign of a medical emergency. Heart failure can be a severe cause of difficulty breathing when lying down.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr AJEET SINGH, General & Family Physician
