What Causes Breathing Difficulty When Diagnosed With Elevated Liver Enzyme Levels?

My husband has been having breathing problems. He went through sleep apnea testing and has had the machine for 3 weeks. It has helped but only slightly with his energy level. We went for a cardiac cath yesterday. They said that he needed to see a liver specialists because his enzymes were high. I tried to get into a liver specialists and was told they couldn t get him in on an urgent based and didn t have a regular appt until Feb and since his enzymes are elevated, he has extended stomach and swelling in neck, throwing up daily, and having a hard time catching his breath he should go to ER to get testing done. He has been living with these symptoms for several months and nobody seems to figure it out. Doesn t seem to be in so much distress at this very moment to go to ER. Suggestions?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Yes, with a history of persistent vomiting, shortness of breath and abdominal distension, he should consider going to the ER for assessment and treatment.

The abdominal distension is likely affecting his breathing because it is pushing up on the lungs.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
