What Causes Breathing Difficulty While Eating Food?

I was eating chips and salsa yesterday. After abut 5 minutes went by, I was swallowing a small portion of salsa, and then I could not breathe. I felt nothing caught in my throat, but I could not take in a breath. I got my friend next to me to slap my back (she did), and then I was able to breathe. what happened to me ? RON

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hello,

I think a bolus of food struck in the post pharynx which may compress larynx lead to breath difficult in sudden. Sudden aspiration of acid into the respiratory tract may cause breathing difficulty. But fewer chances to that food enter into respiratory tract because if food enters into trachea lead to coughing, dyspnea, pallor and cyanosis, collapse.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
