What Causes Breathing Difficulty While Suffering From Acid Reflux?

Dear Doctor A friend went to a GP with breathing difficulty. The GP says it could be acid reflux, and it could be pushing into her lungs. Breathing seems to be more difficult at night... He gave her Topzole 20mg. The medication does not seem to be working. Can you assist with advice please?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Shortness of breath, also called dyspnea, occurs with GERD because stomach acid that creeps into the esophagus can enter the lungs, particularly during sleep, and cause swelling of the airways.
The doctor has correctly prescribed Topzole which reduces acid secretion in the stomach but an anti-reflux agent such as Domperidone should be added which will be highly effective.

I hope I answered your question.
Please do not hesitate to ask more questions.

Regards,
Dr. Prabhash Verma
