What Causes Breathlessness Along With Numbness In The Body?

My husband is having trouble breathing without it being through his open mouth. He is also numb down the entire left side of his body. He thinks it is due to the sleep aid he started taking... He is having trouble gripping with his left hand. He says he feels inebriated.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Numbness in one side of the body along with difficulty in holding or gripping anything with the left hand is indicative of developing peripheral neuropathy.

Such symptoms may arise because of compression, irritation or damage to the nerves in the arms or the wrists.

Such symptoms can be triggered due to diabetes. If he is diabetic, he should control his blood sugar levels at all cost.

He is suggested to visit ER, get physically examined. He should see a Neurologist, get Nerve conduction tests done. Breathlessness can occur due to stress, anxiety, fatigue, weakness & asthma, COPD, CCF, etc.

The treating doctor will require him to go through a series of tests & Imaging tests to detect the pathology causing the discomfort. His treatment will depend upon the pathology detected.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
