What Causes Breathlessness While On Ramipril For High BP?

I have had high BP for a lot of years now and take Ramipril every morning. I started to become breathless and have been investigated for cardiac problems. Although the heart itself seems to be OK, they have referred me also on to the gastroenterologists as my liver results were not normal. Because of my BP I was asked to take Beta blockers as well as Ramipril. I have been feeling odd lately and took my BP last night. It was 168/88 and as I am due to drive 300 miles on my own to see my family later today I wondered if there was anything I could do to try and keep this under control until I can get to my GP next week.

Hi, I'm dr.Anto

Thank you for submitting your question.

Nowadays we have a broad variety of anti-hypertension agent.

Ramipril itself won't give you any breathlessness though it can be caused by your underlying disease which i suspect is a chronic heart failure in early stages, and there might be a complication toward the liver caused by the heart disease which is called cardiac cirrhosis.

It might be good to consume ramipril as he is a sole betablocker which can lower your hypertension as well as re-modelling it toward the better heart. In addition to that it can lower the tension on the vena portae lead to your liver therefore it can lower the risk of cardiac cirrhosis.

But if your breathlessness caused by the bradychardia, it might be because of the ramipril since it works on the beta receptor which is found on the heart.

I would suggest you to go to the local GP or cardiologist which have Electrocardiography that can manage your breathlessness.

In addition to that, the target therapy for hypertension above 60 years old is 150/90 or below 60 years old is 140/90. You were 168/88 so its advisable to change the medicine or add one more.

Thank you.
