What Causes Bright Red Vaginal Bleeding While On Mirena IUD?
Hello, I have had the Mirena IUD for almost a year now and I do not have regular periods. I rarely experience any kind of bleeding, even spotting. Over the last few days, I have been bleeding, bright red blood. I checked the strings on my IUD and they seem longer than before. I m not sure if this is normal or if something may be wrong with the placement.
Hello and welcome to HCM, Continuous bleeding despite insertion of Mirena IUCD is abnormal. The bleeding could be indicative of some organic lesion in the genital tract responsible for the bleeding like endometrial hyperplasia, endometrial growth, cervical growth, disorders of fallopian tubes or ovaries. This, I suggest you to consult your gynecologist for clinical assessment, investigations like ultrasound, endometrial biopsy, pap smear etc for diagnosis. Longer strings of Mirena IUCD could indicate dislodgement of IUCD from endometrial cavity and thus resumption of bleeding. For both the above mentioned conditions, consultation with your gynecologist is mandatory.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
