What Causes Brittle Toe Nails?

Person has a problem with right foot. Big toe, the toe nail is brittle and seems to be crumbling. Also, experiencing pain on bottom of foot under big toe. Seems to get worse when on feet for extended period of time. Pain increases and difficulty walking. Any thoughts?
