What Causes Brown Bruises On The Nail And Toes?

Hi, I am 49 years old and 136 lbs. I am in pretty good health. I am concerned because both of my big toes had a bruise on the nail on one side. Now it has spread over both toe nails and has turned brown. It appears that my toe nails are trying to crack in those areas. Do I need to be concerned about a possible infection? I have no other symptoms and no order. Also, there is no pain associated with this.
