What Causes Brown Color Vaginal Spotting?

my daughter has been on the birth control patch for 5 months, she had some brown spotting yesterday and none since. She had an exam and pap smear 5 days ago. She isn t due to remove her patch for another week. She took a pregnancy test yesterday and it showed a light pos. Could she be pregnant or is the test wrong?
