What Causes Brown Diarrhea Inspite Of Taking Ciprofloxacin And Metronidazole?

Dear sir, 2 weeks before I had fever and watery motions for more than 25 times. I was admitted in hospital and given IV fluids of ciprofloxacin and metronidazole for 3 days and also Racecadotril. On 4th day watery motions came under control but with still loose stools for 3 times a day. After 2 weeks also my stools are not normalised and still I am finding stools to be of dark brownish in colour with uncomfort during passing stools. Kindly advice me. I am not able to take diet in a normal way. Thanking you Sivaprasad

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I understand your concern.

The normal color of stool is brownish. If dark brownish, it seems that your stool is staying for too long in your bowels without passing. This is a side effect of medications you took for diarrhea.

I advise to run a culture of stool to rule out candida infection and get it treated accordingly.

For the moment, increase fluids (water) intake and take probiotics to stabilize intestinal flora.

All the best!
