What Causes Brown Discharge And Cramps After A Child Birth?

i am just about 4 months post partum and have stopped nursing a month ago. ive bee experienceing brown discharge for the last couple of days and slight cramps. i thought i was getting my perios, but its been 2 days already! also with my last pregnancy i did have a bit of brown discharge at about 7 weeks. i took a urine pregnancy test 3 weeks ago since i ihadnt had my period and it was negative? is this normal? post pregnancy?

Hello,
It is normal to experience some amount of disturbance in the menstrual cycles soon after delivery, but not too long after and moreover, when not lactating any more. This situation calls for further evaluation and like you said, pregnancy also needs to be excluded in view of the past history. Please see a specialist, get a clinical exam, an assessment of the serum beta-hCG titres and a trans-vaginal sonogram to plan further management. If pregnancy can be excluded, a breakthrough bleed is suspected and hormone supplements may be given after proper confirmation. Hope this helps.
