What Causes Brown Discharge And Light Spotting During Periods?

Instead of my normal bleeding during my period it was brown discharge. I was on my cycle for about 5 days and only one day it was heavy. The other it was relatively light. I took a pregnancy test and it came out negative. I didn't have my normal cramping or headaches. What could it be?
