What Causes Brown Discharge Before And During Periods?

Hi, So about two weeks ago there was some dark brown gooey stuff comeing out of my vaginal area and later that day i started spotting blood and it happened for 3 days. Then abou a week and a half later i started my period and the brown stuff is still comeing out and my periods are A LOT lighter then usual and not really heavy cramps like usual. Am i okay?
